The Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) celebrates its 20th anniversary in The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), under the theme “20 years at the Service of Africa’s most vulnerable”.
It has indeed been two decades of service to the continent’s most vulnerable, as what was started in 2003 during the height of the HIV pandemic, to create awareness and help stem the spread of HIV and to reduce stigma, has now evolved into a tool for advocacy on other important developmental issues facing the continent.
During H.E Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo’s intervention, she highlighted some of the projects The Rebecca Foundation has undertaken to improve the lives of women and children in the area of health, which include the Baby and Mother Unit at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi and the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit as well as the Hostel for cancer patients at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
The Organisation also launched a unifying campaign aimed at achieving gender equality in Africa.
