BECAUSE I WANT TO BE … IS OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED

The Rebecca Foundation, in collaboration with United Nations Population Fund, launched a project today at the Wesley Methodist Church in Accra.

This project is targeted at adolescent girls who have struggled to stay in school due to a myriad of socio-economic challenges. With this project, they will be mentored to go back and complete their education and for those who cannot be equipped with skills to enable them to fend for themselves.

In a classic town hall meeting fashion, the First Lady, H.E. Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo interacted in the local Ga Language with the indigenes of those gathered who were predominantly young mothers. She stressed the need to pursue their education and provide a better future for their families. The women listened with rapt attention and shared their sentiments of this intervention which they are hopeful will give them a better chance at life.

The First Lady has steadily complemented the efforts of government in the past eighteen months with timely solutions to challenges. You will recall the speed with which she completed a state of the art mother and baby unit within six months at the Komfo- Anokye Teaching Hospital. Currently, she is gearing up to complete a paediatric emergency unit at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

This latest project will benefit nine communities along the coast of Greater Accra Region in partnership with UNFPA.

The Rebecca Foundation will work with community leaders to find localized solutions to the issues that confront low enrolment and high attrition rates of adolescent girls.

Present at the event were the following personalities,
Adjei Sowah, Mayor, Accra, Elizabeth Sackey, Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister and Niyi Ojuolape, UNFPA Country Director.
